Why does the iOS 8 update require almost 6GB of free space?

Why does the iOS 8 update require almost 6GB of free space?

This is approaching the formatted capacity of 8GB iPhones and half the capacity of 16GB iPhones and iPads. To the best of my recollection, the much more extensive iOS 7 update didn't require half as much free space.

Great question.

It's not going to occupy that space when the update is done. The package needs room to decompress everything, assemble the modules for install and the clean up.

Jason's answer is correct. To add to it: this free space requirement only exists if you're updating using the over-the-air update on your device. If you update your device through iTunes on a computer, you don't need 6 GB of free space on the device.
