It’s more about configuration than it is software. The screen will time out quicker, brightness will dim. Mail starts to degrade the push services in lieu of fetch. Screen animations pause and persistent apps become less persistent in a shorter amount of time.

What Apple wanted to achieve with low power mode was exactly that…low power. But shutting off radios leaves the handset isolated from data. There is no functional mode replacement for turning things off better than simply shutting the phone off, which isn’t the goal.

LPM is a temporary mode of operation that will keep you connected longer when electrons are out of reach.


In fact, it’s so temporary – that it will shift itself out of Low Power Mode automatically, when about 80% battery capacity has been achieved.
