Apple decides not to donate to the GOP Convention

Politico, citing two sources “familiar with the iPhone maker’s plan”, Apple has decided not to donate tech, time or treasure to the GOP convention.

Apple has donated their expertise, inventions as well as cash to various political parties during the presidential election cycle. In 2008 Apple donated $140k in iDevices to the Republican Party convention.

That was then…

But things have changed. Apple has been under fire from all sides when it comes to scrutiny from the government. Not only from politicians, but from law enforcement agencies at the federal, state and even the county level:

“I can tell you, the first time we do have trouble getting into a cell phone, we’re going to seek a court order from Apple,” he said. “And when they deny us, I’m going to go lock the CEO of Apple up. I’ll lock the rascal up.”

– Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd

In the days following the terrorist attack in San Bernardino California, most of the republicans and statistically about half of Americans sided with the US Government position on building a version of iOS specifically for the government that does not have the basic requirements for privacy protection. Things like limited failure attempts for pin-codes for lock screens. By complying, Apple would have effectively given the government the power to have access to the private information of hundreds of millions of people across the globe.

Not wanting to look soft on terror, Donald Trumps social media campaign tweets  this:

On Apple manufacturing, Donald Trump had the following to say:

“…We’re gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries.”

        – Donald Trump

The republicans don’t hold a monopoly on manufacturing ignorance when it comes to Cupertino logistics, however. Bernie Sanders also had some words of guidance for Tim Cooks crew:

“Apple is not destroying the fabric of America. But I do wish they’d be manufacturing some of their devices, here, in the United States rather than in China. And I do wish that they would not be trying to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.”

 – Bernie Sanders

Whether or not Trump and Sanders both purposefully omitted that Apple computers  are built in the United States is not clear. But this is a sore spot for Apple, who is very protective about its public image. It’s manufacturing processes, environmental impact, and of course taxes paid on revenue…get scrutinized almost daily.

Impact on the GOP Convention

The GOP should really be fine without Apple technology supporting the convention. Donald Trump has stated he uses both Samsung products in tandem with his iPhone. Hopefully things will go smoothly. Both Microsoft and Google have stated that they will be there to support the GOP. Hopefully Team Android will figure out what happened last time:
